Here Are Tesla’s Biggest Announcements From Battery Day. According to The Verge, The company will phase out cobalt and aims for a $25k car-Elon Musk. The company’s move towards eliminating cobalt in the batteries, a new Plaid powertrain for the Model S that could get to speeds of 200 mph, and also a new cathode plant to streamline its production.
However, the company plans to produce its own tabless batteries, that will improve its vehicle’s power and range. The battery is said to be manufactured in-house, which will reduce costs and bring the sale price of Tesla electric cars nearer to gasoline-powered cars, according to Musk.
The model S Plaid will be available in late 2021 and will cost $139,990. The model will have a range between charges of 520 miles, get from 0-6 mph in under two seconds, and also a top speed of 200mph.
Tesla has plans to eliminate the use of cobalt in its cathodes. Cobalt is always mined under conditions that violate human rights, which leads to a push to find other materials to replace it.
Here Are Tesla’s Biggest Announcements From Battery Day
CEO Elon Musk made some big announcements at Tesla’s Battery event- the company walks towards eliminating cobalt in its batteries, a new Plaid powertrain for the Model S that could get to speeds of 200 mph, and a new cathode plant to streamline its battery production. Musk said, with the new battery tech Tesla will make a $25,000 car.
The social distanced outdoor events had Musk and other presenters addressing Tesla shareholders in parked cars, who honked their horns to indicate their approval of the speaker’s remark, thus, its almost like a drive-in/shareholders meeting.
Tabless Battery Cells Will Improve Teslas’ Range
Tesla plans to produce its own tabless batteries. A battery that will improve its vehicles’ range and power. The battery will be produced in-house, which will reduce costs and bring the sale price of Tesla electric cars closer to gasoline-powered cars. However, it is expected to lower Tesla’s coat per kilowatt-hour, a key metric used to measure electric vehicles’ battery packs. The company is taking out the tab that connects the cell and what it’s powering, which is known as the 4680 cells. Thus, will make its batteries six times more powerful and Increase range by 16%.
Currently, the company source its batteries from Panasonic and is likely to keep doing so for some time, but moving battery production in-house has been on Musk’s mind for some time; in 2018 a shortage of those cells added to production delays. Musk said that the pace of battery production at Panasonic had slowed the production of both Model 3 and Y.
Costs Of Model S Plaid/Availability
The price is listed on Tesla’s website at $139,990. And will be available in the model S in late 2021. Thus, the battery will range between charges of 520 miles, 0-60 mph in less than two seconds and a top speed of 200mph.
A New Cathode Plant Is On The Way
According to Musk, the company will build a new cathode plant for its batteries in North America, part of its quest to reduce supply chain costs and simplify cathode production. It also making improvements to make cathodes 76% cheaper, and produce zero wastewater. Due to low nickel supplies, Tesla plans on diversifying the cathodes it uses.
There Would Be No More Cobalt In The Cathodes
The company also makes a plan of eliminating the use of cobalt in its cathodes. Musk said he wanted to remove it in the past, even though Tesla’s existing batteries use very little of it. Cobalt is often mined under the conditions that violate human rights, which leads to the push to find its replacement.
Moreover, there’s no given timeline on when the company will stop using cobalt, but they said it will make their battery cheaper.
The Goal of Building A $25000 Car
The company plans to reduce the cost of its battery pack and cells with the aim of building a $25.000 electric car. Musk said that Tesla will hit this goal using its new battery cells and changing the materials inside the cell and should allow the company to halve the price per kilowatt-hour.
