The smartphone was introduced in January 2007, by former Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The company regularly releases new iPhone models, introducing new features and designs. The newest version as of 2017, was the iPhone X(iPhone 10) which has a full touchscreen interface unlike the previous model with the traditional home button. According to Gadgets.ndtv Apple prepares to start producing iPhone 12 in India. The new manufacturing plan will reportedly kick off by Apple partner Wistron sometime in the mid-2021. The Cupertino giant is already assembling several of it’s existing iPhone models in the country, which includes iPhone 11 and iPhone XR as well as iPhone 6s and iPhone 7. Apple partner, Wistron, began to assemble iPhone models in the country as of 2017.
The new iPhone model (iPhone 12) is yet to be announced by Apple, it will be the seventh iPhone model to be made in India, reports Business Standard. However, the newspaper citing people familiar with the development said “ the manufacturing would take place at Wistron’s Karnataka facility.”
So far, Apple has localized production of five iPhone models in the country, with the iPhone 11 being in the latest model that got made- in-India treatment in July. Wistron reportedly planning to start manufacturing the iPhone SE(2020) in the country sometime by the end of 2020.
Wistron New Facility Plan
According to the report by Business Standard, Wistron has plans to hire up to 10,000 workers at a new facility in a phased manner to enlarge the local manufacturing process. At present, the facility has a headcount of around 1,000 workers. However, the contract manufacturer is said to have planned investment of more than Rs.2,900 crores to bolster it’s operations.
According to The New Indian Express report, the new facility by Wistron is situated in Narasapura of Kolar district in Karnataka. It will be the second facility by the contract manufacturer in Karnataka after producing the earlier iPhone models.
Ravi Shankar Prasad, the Union Minister revealed earlier this month that Apple contract manufacturers Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron had applied for a $6.64 billion scheme under the government’s production- linked incentive plan to embrace and expand local manufacturing in the country. Wistron and Foxconn are currently manufacturing iPhone models locally, while Pegatron is yet to launch it’s locally made in the country.
