‘Winds Of Winter’ Release Date Could Explain Forgotten Daenerys Conspiracy
According to Inverse Fans believe George Martin has a lot of questions to answer in the Winds of Winter. They’re hoping that the author’s been using his time in quarantine to finish the remaining chapters of the Winds of Winter, which is the sixth novel in the Song of Ice and Fire series. However, he has made some progress, but the book’s release date has yet to be made official (it’s set to publish next year).
However, waiting for more updates has given Westeros watchers lots of time to ponder Martin’s plans for the upcoming book. After all, the Game of Thrones finale left a lot to be desired and the HBO series dropped several characters from the show completely. So, Martin’s upcoming books are a chance for redemption.
Season 1 Of The HBO Series
In the first season of the HBO series, Illyrio Mopatis was the immensely rich merchant prince and benefactor of Daenerys and Viserys Targaryen. He arranged the marriage between Khal Drogo and Dany. He gave her a wedding present which is three dragon eggs. Illyrio was also a close friend of Varys, who is the Master of Whispers who served on the small council. These two conspired together, seemingly pushing for a civil war between the Starks and Lannisters.
Moreover, Illyrio vanished and was referenced a couple more times in later seasons. But it remained unclear why David Benioff and D.B Weiss didn’t bring him back, considering the significant role he played alongside Varys.
Illyrio is more crucial to the plot in George Martin’s books and it’s possible that the truth behind their conspiracy will be revealed in the Winds of Winter.
Whispers, Influence, And Scheme
Varys and Illyrio were friends since childhood. They rose from rags to riches, becoming influential men with royals in their pockets and a sprawling network of informants. Varys to King’s Landing to advise Aerys II Targaryen; while Illyrio stayed behind protecting Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen from afar before becoming their benefactor.
However, in this book varies convinces Jon Connington to leave the golden company, a powerful group of mercenaries for hire, and fake his own death. Jon, who is loyal to House Targaryen, takes on the identity of Griff. Jon/Griff is the “father” of young Griff, whom many Westerosi speculate to be the true Prince Aegon Targaryen. But most AOIAF readers believe he is not the real Aegon.
The first book of Martin sets up the pairs converging storylines, improving that Varys and Illyrio have a larger goal in mind to restore the Targaryens to power. However, Varys also take part in escalating the tensions between the Starks and the Lannisters, giving information to Bed Stark about Cersei and Jaime’s relationships, including King Robert’s death.
